Domestic animals are part of our lives, our homes, and our communities, but their presence has far-reaching and often overlooked consequences for wildlife. In South Africa, where biodiversity is both rich and under pressure, the interaction between domestic animals and wild species is one of the most significant drivers of injury, displacement, and death.

This course explores the real impact of domestic animals on wildlife – from beloved pets to small-scale backyard animals and large livestock systems. Drawing on international and local research, including studies from University of Cape Town, and real-world rescue experience, we unpack the scale of the problem, the mechanisms of harm, and, most importantly, practical, humane solutions.

Shireen Freeman is a wildlife rescuer, educator, and the founder of Grace Valley Wildlife Rescue, a wildlife first responder organisation serving the Overberg region of South Africa.

Through her rescue work and public training, Shireen has helped hundreds of wild animals and educated communities on how to assist wildlife safely and responsibly.
