Every year, thousands of wild animals are found injured, orphaned or displaced by well meaning members of the public. The first few minutes can make all the difference, but only if we know what to do.
Our Wildlife First Responder Training equips you with the knowledge and confidence to respond safely, reduce unnecessary stress, and get wildlife to the right help. You’ll learn how to assess common situations, when not to intervene, safe capture and transport techniques, species specific considerations, and how to work alongside South Africa’s permitted wildlife rehabilitation centres.
By joining this training, you’ll also become part of a growing national network of Wildlife First Responders, with access to our supported WhatsApp group where you can receive guidance from experienced responders and rehabilitators whenever you need it.
Whether you’re a nature lover, volunteer, veterinary professional, conservation student, security officer, field guide, or simply want to be prepared, this course will give you practical skills that could one day save a life.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: Does this course qualify me to rehab wildlife?
A: No. You will need a provincial permit in order to treat wildlife patients. This course gives you the knowledge and skills to be a proactive first responder. It teaches you how to educate and assist the public, mitigate the unnecessary removal of healthy wildlife from nature, recognise common medical emergencies, and how to safely capture, stabilize and transport wildlife to the nearest permitted centre for treatment.
Q: Do I need a car to be a first responder?
A: No. A lot of the work we do is educating the public, which can be done over the phone.
Q: How does the national first responder network work?
A: After the training you will be able to join our Wild Way First Responder Network, which is a WhatsApp group. This is where all the action happens. There are experienced responders and permitted rehabbers on this group to offer support and guidance on real rescues in real time.
Q: Do we have to keep records of our rescues?
A: Yes, you will be able to register as a wildlife first responder and then you can record all your mitigations and rescues. This data ensures that we are contributing to conservation and allows us to see where we can be more proactive.
